The herringbone pattern originated during the Roman Empire where it was first used during construction of roadways.Inspired by the shape and pattern of the bones of the herring fish, the Romans arranged pavement stones in a herringbone pattern to increase the strength of the brick under compression. Herringbone pattern was used in textiles in Ireland dating back to 600 B.C.
